What is Devised Theatre?
Devised theatre is a process in which the whole creative team develops a show collaboratively. Dr. Shawyer, the Director of Concord Floral, advocates for this kind of work. She argues, “it’s a really exciting way of making theatre.”
This art form has increased in popularity, especially among those who are interested in the freedom of creating their own work. It can explore topics without the time, content, and other possible restrictions that accompany other types of theatrical rehearsal processes.
Both educational and professional theatres use devised theatre to address social issues, create unique theatrical moments, and deconstruct dramatic literature. Devised Theatre is a strong tool for creating ensemble work. Dr. Shawyer also reflects on its value for the cast, “For performers, Ensemble Devising really helps everyone be aware of their ensemble and understand how their small part may fit into the greater whole.”
Another quote from Shawyer highlights an opportunity for Elon students to try Devised theatre, "If you're interested in Devising, Scott Proudfit will be teaching a Devising class this spring. He teaches it every other year, so there are opportunities for all Elon students to learn and practice Ensemble Devising.”
